bathroom on a budget
Recently, we made the decision to go ahead and give our two half baths a facelift. This is not our forever home but figured in the long run, whether we end up renting it out or eventually selling this home, it would only benefit us to make updates around the house to increase value and add aesthetic. I should add, Mike and I are not the handiest people. To be honest, I may even be more handy than Mike (sorry babe!), but we are both learning new skills as we continue on this adventure that is home ownership. We knew when we bought this house that there were certain things we’d be able to complete on our own and other projects we would leave up to professionals.
Going in to this bathroom facelift, we had a vision of what we wanted it to look like and we wanted to stick to a reasonable budget. A pretty limited budget if you ask me. Of course we ended up exceeding this budget by a bit due to unexpected circumstances, as with most projects, but we still didn’t break the bank.
Our wish list:
New flooring - was the original, construction grade, 4x4 inch tiles; it was all cracked and the grout was stained etc.
New vanities - wanted to create a more functional space by replacing the original pedestal sinks with cabinet vanities
New, updated fixtures - not only were the fixtures nearly 20 years old, we were hoping for a more modern look
New toilet seats and plumbing - it was cringe worthy sitting on toilet seats that previous owners/renters had sat on
This was the “vibe” we were going for. I don’t even know what you would call it. Modern farmhouse? Sure, let’s go with that.
First things first, painting the two bathrooms a neutral, light color transformed the bathrooms in itself. I went ahead and took down all the fixtures, spackled, and painted the walls. Once the paint job was done, I installed all the new wall fixtures! Mike helped me install the lighting/electrical, don’t worry :) As I mentioned before, Mike and I are not knowledgeable with handy or renovation work so we went ahead and hired someone to help us with the flooring and plumbing. We knew that hiring someone to help us with the demolition and installation of the floors would not only save us time, but it would be done right and well. We chose the materials we wanted and they had both bathroom floors demo’d and done in TWO DAYS. That probably would have taken us weeks haha.
And there we have it. Slapped up a couple of frames and artwork to decorate and called it a day. A simple update with a big impact aesthetically. We accomplished everything on our “wish list” and all for a reasonable price tag.
Now on to the next home improvement project…
xoxo
